Bloomin’ Onions

Ingredients

This gluten-free bloom-style onion is a lighter, home-friendly take on a classic restaurant favorite, made with simple ingredients and a balanced blend of spices. Using gluten-free flour keeps the coating crisp while remaining accessible to various dietary needs, and the double-dip method ensures even texture and flavor throughout each petal.

The onion is carefully cut to create its signature “bloom,” allowing it to fry evenly and open beautifully. With warm spices like cumin, paprika, and cayenne, this recipe delivers bold flavor while using straightforward, wholesome pantry staples. Perfect as an appetizer or shareable treat, it brings a fun, crowd-pleasing presentation to the table without unnecessary additives.

Onions

  • 2 onions

Wet Mix

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg

Dry Mix

  • 1/2 cup gluten-free all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Cut off the tops & outer layer of the onions.
  2. Placing the onion cut side down & cut the onion starting 1/2″ below the root going all the way down to the cutting board. Repeat this cut 10-14 times around the onion.
  3. Flip the onions over & use your fingers to gently separate the layers.
  4. Mix all of the wet mix ingredients together in one bowl.
  5. In another bowl, mix all of the dry ingredients together.
  6. Dip the onions once in the dry mixture, once in the wet mixture, and once more in the dry mixture.
  7. Fry each onion for about 5-7 minutes in very hot oil (about 375).

I made a simple dip to go along with the onions – 1 part mayo, 1 part Greek yogurt, and 1 part sriracha sauce.
